「Macau」由「妈阁」音译而来——1488年创建的澳门最古老庙宇，葡人初登岸在庙前问地名，渔民答「妈阁」，遂成城市之名。石殿与弘仁殿沿岩而凿，香火五百余年不断；庙前葡式碎石路与中式石狮同框，正是这座城市的隐喻。春节与农历三月廿三天后诞香火最盛，免费开放，建议清晨人少时到访。

妈阁庙创建于1488年，是澳门最古老的庙宇之一，背依妈阁山，由正殿、弘仁殿等组成，弘仁殿凿于岩壁之内，供奉妈祖。相传葡人初登岸时在庙前问路，渔民以「妈阁」作答，遂成「Macau」之名的由来。庙内现存清代石狮与「洋船石」石刻，记录古代商船对天后的崇拜；每年农历三月廿三天后诞与春节期间香火鼎盛，是澳门华人信仰的核心场域，也是这座城市的命名原点。
Founded in 1488 and partly carved into the hillside, A-Ma Temple is Macao's oldest shrine — and its namesake: the answer "A-Ma Gau" given at its door became "Macau" in Portuguese mouths. Qing-dynasty lions and the carved "foreign-ship stone" record centuries of seafarer worship; the goddess's birthday on the 23rd day of the third lunar month still floods the hill with incense.
